Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf portray Björn Borg and John McEnroe in the upcoming Swedish biographical film Borg Vs. McEnroe, about the rivalry between the two famous tennis players.
Written by Ronnie Sandahl and directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, the film focuses on the lives of Borg and and McEnroe and on their legendary duel during the 1980’s Wimbledon tournament.
The cast ensemble includes also Stellan Skarsgård as Lennart Bergelin, a Swedish tennis player and Borg’s coach, Tuva Novotny as Mariana Simionescu, a Romanian tennis player and Borg’s fiancée, Robert Emms as Vitas Gerulaitis, an American professional tennis player, and others.
“You and Borg are different as two people could possible be” – is told McEnroe is one of the scenes revealed in the trailer, which features moments from Borg’s childhood, when he expressed his urge to “be the best” in tennis not only in Sweden, but in the entire world. Another scene features McEnroe during a press conference, bursting in front of journalists and telling them “You don’t understand what the f… it takes to play tennis.” Skarsgård’s voice can be heard in the background advising Gudnason’s character, Borg, to load into every stroke “All that rage. The fear. The panic” he might be feeling.
Borg Vs. McEnroe is scheduled to be released this fall, on September 22.
